Project Koderma – Direct Intervention

Campaign Story

About the project

The 10 villages in Satgawan Block of Koderma district, Jharkhand, are largely dependent on daily wage labour, marginal farming, and agricultural work. Poor school infrastructure, a shortage of trained teachers, and limited access to Anganwadi Centre services, driven by low community awareness, have led to irregular attendance, high dropout rates, and instances of child labour and early marriage. Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) services remain critically weak due to infrastructural gaps, along with parents’ hesitation to send their children for early education because of limited awareness.

Making a difference

CRY America’s project in Koderma focuses on providing education support and protection to children across 10 villages in the Satgawan Block. It aims to keep children in school by enrolling and re-enrolling first-time learners and those who have dropped out, while working closely with School Management Committees to address infrastructural and resource gaps. The project also seeks to strengthen child protection mechanisms to reduce instances of child labor and early marriage.

The way forward

● Ensure the enrollment of 320 children aged 6–18 years in formal schooling, with access to remedial education
● Distribute educational materials to 320 children to support learning continuity
● Conduct a child protection workshop with 30 stakeholders to reduce instances of child labour and early marriage
● Link 50 vulnerable families to social protection programmes for financial aid, and 10 families to child protection programmes to leverage foster care and education sponsorships
● Strengthen 10 Children’s Collectives, engaging 342 children on issues of education, child marriage, and child labour
● Train 80 children through life skills sessions and 80 parents through two parent module trainings

Koderma DI

From loss to state-level Kabaddi player

Abjeet’s world changed when he lost his mother at the age of 12. Though his grandparents tried to comfort him, the loss left him withdrawn and insecure. This began to reflect in his academics, as he struggled to concentrate and express what he was going through. He loved sports, especially Kabaddi, but stopped stepping out to play. When CRY America’s project team learned about his situation, they gently encouraged him to join the Children’s Collective, creating a safe space where he could slowly begin to open up. He was also enrolled in CRY’s Child Activity Center, where the team worked patiently to address his learning gaps and rebuild his focus through participation, interaction, and peer learning activities.

To support his emotional well-being, the team provided regular counselling, helping him regain confidence and a sense of belief in himself. During one such session, Abjeet shared his interest in Kabaddi. Recognizing this as an opportunity, the team encouraged him to take it up again.

With consistent practice, Kabaddi became more than a sport, it helped him rebuild discipline, focus, and confidence. This positive shift was reflected in his academics as well.

When district-level trials were announced, Abjeet chose to participate and was selected for the District-level Sports Talent Selection Competition. Today, he represents his state in a State-level Kabaddi event. Abjeet proudly says, “I want to make my village proud by studying well and playing better Kabaddi.”
